Three placentas have been found in sewage treatment plant filters in Chicago. Officials are investigating.
This is unbelievable. Placentas are not trash! They should never be dumped in a sewer in such a disgraceful manner. It is dishonorable, and casts a negative light on our society. Where is the sacred in birth when we treat the resulting products with such carelessness and utter lack of regard? As though women give birth to sewage? In other cultures, the placenta is given great respect and reverence.
Beyond that, every healthy placenta that is discarded means another mother is entering her postpartum transition without the nourishing health benefits she could otherwise receive. Mothers need the placenta for optimum health, and faster recovery. Placentas are created as a life support for the baby, and a path to wellness for the mother after the birth.
Placentas truly are a gift from Nature, and throwing such perfection in the sewer is a disgrace.
