It is with great sadness that I must announce that Placenta Benefits and the entire Pennsylvania Birth Community has lost a wonderful advocate and friend.
Dulcy Nemeth Sacan, our Philadelphia/Drexel Hill, PA Placenta Encapsulation Specialist® passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2012. From a young age, Dulcy had two goals, to help birthing women and to be a mother. Dulcy married Ahmet Sacan, in 2006 and was the mother of Kayra, age 5. During their married life, Dulcy and Ahmet lived in Ankara, Turkey from mid 2006 to mid 2007, where their daughter was born. They also lived in Columbus, OH and Philadelphia, PA. Dulcy was known for her sweet disposition and loving personality.
Dulcy completed birth doula training with DONA in 2005. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2008 from The Ohio State University with magna cum laude distinction. In December of 2011, she earned her Masters degree in Midwifery and Women’s Health Care from the University Of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Additionally, Dulcy was pursuing certification in massage therapy.
In the Penn Midwifery Class of 2011’s promotional video, Dulcy shares her beautiful voice, singing about the topic she loved so much, birth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-_S3X5y4H0&feature=youtu.be (You can see her snippet at the 1:42 minute marker.)
Dulcy was even mentioned by Anita Diamant, the author of The Red Tent, in her blog post here: http://anitadiamant.blogspot.com/2011/06/red-tent-in-song.html
During high school gym class, Dulcy favored a shirt with an inside view of a pregnant woman’s belly, including the fetus, umbilical cord, membranes, placenta, uterus and displacement of the mother’s other internal organs, earning her the nickname of ‘Placenta Lady’. As far back as kindergarten, the stick figures that Dulcy drew were pregnant. Dulcy loved cooking and baking bread, having tea with friends, hiking outside, canoeing, volunteering as a doula, and quilting.
Dulcy’s obituary can be read here: http://obits.cleveland.com/obituaries/Cleveland/obituary.aspx?n=DULCY-SACAN-Nemeth&pid=157765773
If you wish to donate in her honor, the family has asked that donations be sent to Planned Parenthood of Southeast Pennsylvania, www.plannedparenthood.org/ppsp/
Dulcy was brilliant; one of the worlds’s shining stars. At PBi we are all moved by this incredible loss. She will be greatly missed, not only by those of us here at PBi, but throughout the birth community.
