Mississippi has changed the classification of placenta, freeing hospitals to release placentas to mothers upon request.
The Mississippi Department of Health has removed the classification of placenta as “medical waste”, a designation that led hospitals to refuse to release placentas to parents, or force them to get a court order to take the placenta home.
This is all thanks to Jordan Thiering, a mother who stood up to the hospital and the state health department to fight for her right to take both her baby AND her baby’s placenta home from the hospital. Congratulations Jordan, and thank you on behalf of Mississippi mothers as well.
