Jodi Selander

Jodi Selander started researching placentophagy in 2005 during her second pregnancy. She found substantial information documenting the benefits it offered. Having dealt with depression for many years, Jodi had many risk factors for developing postpartum depression. With a B.S. in Psychology, she understood the devastating effects depression could have on women and their families. As a natural health enthusiast, she wanted an alternative to pharmaceuticals that might help avoid those issues.

 

Placenta Encapsulation Protocol
After studying various techniques, she developed an encapsulation process that has become the proprietary method of encapsulation used by all of PBi's Placenta Encapsulation Specialist®s. Dissatisfied with the lack of appropriate terminology for the process, she coined the term "placenta encapsulation", which has since become the standard.

 

Jodi founded Placenta Benefits.info in July 2006, which has become the leading resource for placenta encapsulation resources and services. She launched her initial Placenta Encapsulation Specialist® Training Course in 2007. Jodi has created the standards for placenta encapsulation not only in the US, but in Canada, Australia and the UK as well. Placenta Benefits (PBi) has become the world standard in placenta encapsulation training, and the only organization with its Standard Operating Procedures on file with the FDA in the US, and the FSA in the UK.

Research & Education
As a member of the placentophagy research team at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Jodi has helped develop and perform several research studies on placentophagy. She is currently involved in collecting data for a new and ongoing 'placenta vs placebo' research study. Her first peer-reviewed research paper was published in January of 2013, and compared women's experiences with placentophagy. She traveled to New Orleans to present the findings at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association, and has spoken regularly at conferences around the world, since this research is incredibly important to her mission of validating the use of placenta for postpartum recovery.

 

Jodi has also written and published several articles on the use of placenta for postpartum recovery, and her book on postpartum recovery was published in 2014 - The Postpartum Survival Guide is available now. She teaches her Postpartum Survival Course based on the book several times a year, and is available for speaking opportunities.

 

Advocacy
Jodi Selander is an avid advocate for women's rights. When a hospital in Las Vegas forced a friend and client to obtain a court order before they would give her the placenta that she had created and birthed, Jodi coordinated a rally that was staged in front of the hospital and helped the mother get her baby's placenta back. When the same hospital continued to trample on the rights of her clients, she fought back again. This time the hospital yielded to the pressure brought by numerous supporters and the media, and has since changed their guidelines for releasing placentas. Every hospital in Las Vegas now releases placentas to mothers, due in large part to Jodi's advocacy efforts.

 

The Mission
Jodi Selander continues to work toward her mission of making placenta encapsulation an option for every new mother with the launch of her latest training program PBiU - Postnatal Education and Training in January of 2015. Her goal is to have a qualified person in every city offering placenta encapsulation services, so that women everywhere can enjoy a happy, healthy postpartum experience - the way Nature intended.
