Jan Tritten of Midwifery Today wrote a recent blog post on the myth of the trapped placenta.
Apparently the 3rd stage of labor, birthing the placenta, is also managed by the clock. Just as a woman “must” deliver within 24 hours of her waters breaking, the placenta “must” be born within 30-60 minutes after the baby or the cervix will snap shut, trapping the placenta inside!
Placentas: Delivered in 30 minutes or less!
Jan asked Michael Odent, leading physiology expert about this concern: “… [the time limits] began once artificial oxytocin became routine after birth.” Jan says, “So, in fact, it is the Pitocin that closes the cervix, not nature. Once again the lesson is: Don’t fool with Mother Nature!”
I find it interesting that the world is taxed by overpopulation issues, since women are so unable to give birth properly and in a timely fashion.
