Jodi Selander
Founder, Placenta Benefits.info

Jodi Selander, Placenta Benefits LtdJodi Selander started researching placentophagy in 2005 during her second pregnancy. She found substantial information documenting the benefits it offered. Having dealt with depression for many years, Jodi had many risk factors for developing postpartum depression. A natural birth enthusiast, she wanted an alternative to pharmaceuticals that might help avoid those issues.

After studying various techniques, she developed an encapsulation process that has become the proprietary method of encapsulation used by all of PBi's Placenta Encapsulation Specialists.

Her baby's placenta yielded nearly 200 capsules, and she began taking them in the first week postpartum. She did not have a single day of the baby blues. She felt wonderful, and was blessed with a very fast recovery. The abundance of energy experienced when taking the capsules was an unexpected and welcome effect.

After her personal experience with placenta capsules, Jodi wanted to help other women benefit from placenta. Dissatisfied with the current terminology for the process, she coined the term "placenta encapsulation", which has since become the standard.

The feedback received from the women who utilized her placenta encapsulation services was overwhelming. Hearing one positive story after another, Jodi felt even more passionate that every woman must know that placenta encapsulation could help them have a better postpartum recovery.

Several months and numerous client testimonials later, she launched Placenta Benefits.info in July 2006, which has grown into the leading resource for placenta encapsulation tools and services.

Jodi Selander is an avid advocate for women's rights. When a hospital in Las Vegas forced a friend and client to obtain a court order before they would give her the placenta that she had created and birthed, Jodi coordinated a rally that was staged in front of the hospital and helped her get her placenta back. When the same hospital continued to trample on the rights of her clients, she fought back again. This time the hospital yielded to the pressure brought by numerous supporters and the media, and has since changed their guidelines for releasing placentas. Every hospital in Las Vegas now releases placentas to mothers, due in large part to Jodi's advocacy efforts.

There is a great deal of work left to be done before placentas will be seen as they should - as a path to wellness for women, and a sacred connection to babies and birth. But with perseverance and advocacy, those changes will come. In time, placenta encapsulation will become a common and accepted practice, to the benefit of every new mother.

Jodi Selander continues to work toward her mission of making placenta encapsulation an option for every new mother with the launch of the Placenta Encapsulation Specialist Training & Certification Course in May 2008. Her goal is to have a qualified person in every city offering encapsulation services, so that women everywhere can enjoy a happy, healthy postpartum experience - the way nature intended.

Jodi Selander and Erin Martinez
Erin fought Sunrise Hospital for possession of her baby's placenta and won. Jodi organized a rally of supporters and the media around her cause, and the hospital reversed its decision and released the placenta. Jodi was happy to prepare the placenta in capsules for Erin afterward.
