I first became interested in placenta encapsulation when I was pregnant with my first child. Before getting pregnant I barely even understood what it was a placenta does, let alone it's potential benefits for me post-partum. But my husband has a degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and not only was able to tell me all about how it was used traditionally, but also show me texts off our own shelf that I didn't even know were there! I did my research and was all set to go for it. Unfortunately I was not able to do it that time around because there was question about its viability. As it turned out, I did get post-partum depression, and it was awful. I didn't sleep well, I couldn't bond with my baby, I barely even wanted to be around her, and my husband had a hard time being around both of us. I resolved never to let that happen again if I could avoid it!
My first encapsulation was for a friend of mine who in turn did mine when my second child was born. What a difference! I was tired and a little sensitive for the first two weeks, but otherwise completely fine! I coudn't believe that with two children instead of one, that I could actually feel better and less run-down that I did the first time. Since then I have committed myself to making this service available to other mamas who could prevent the rough transition into motherhood that I had the first time around. I hope all mamas will consider taking advantage of this wonderful resources their own body has provided, and not experience the same troubles I did!
